STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“Any one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33)

When we first hear this statement it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His disciples.

Our annual Labor Day Bazaar being held this weekend is a good example of using the resources entrusted to us for the good of others, of sharing the gifts God has given us. All the prizes, the goods needed for all the booths - everything needed to make the Bazaar a success - is brought about through the generosity of our parishioners, many whose kids have long since graduated from St. Joseph School, but who still love our school and are willing to make a sacrificial gift of time, talent and treasure - all the qualities of a good Steward - to help keep our school open. We pray that God will once again bless the combined efforts of our parishioners and our school families as we share the many gifts He has given us.

Please support the businesses who advertise in our bulletin.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.” (Luke 14:14)

We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return - a raffle ticket, a dinner, a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.

We should all be very grateful to the Christian Stewards who are accepting the ministry of being teachers in our Religious Education program. They have been very generous in agreeing to give their time and talent for the good of the children and youth of our parish. The only thing being asked in return for their efforts is that parents bring their children to class. The education of our children in their Catholic Faith is one of the most critical, most important things we can do for them. Please ask God to bless Larry & Sarah, Rhonda, Rosalia and Dorothy.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“For behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.” (Luke 13:30)

Our standards in our society are so different from God’s standards. We often rate or rank people by what they have, how powerful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards.

Thank you to Larry Fox for facilitating two sessions of the VIRTUS training on Tuesday. We are very grateful for the donation of your time (2:30 - 9:00pm) and talent, and for showing us what it means to be a good Steward, using the gifts God has given you. Both sessions were very well attended. Thanks to all who came, who took time out of your day to do what the Bishops have asked you to do. You are all Stewards as well, volunteering your time in various ministries for the good of our church and school.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.”
(Luke 1:49)

Mary reminds us of the very foundation for stewardship. The Lord has done great things for all of us. Every single thing we have is a gift from God. He has blessed us abundantly - in little ways and in great ways, so when we are called upon to share some of our gifts with the world we should remember the lesson of the Blessed Virgin. We should say “Yes” trusting that God is good and He will take care of us. He does great things for us!

Might Jesus be calling you to help with our Religious Education program this year? Do we take for granted those who have taught year after year, not thinking of the commitment of time and talent that it takes? Consider saying “Yes” to offering your stewardship this year!

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” Luke 12:15

Jesus tells us to build up our treasure in heaven. The world encourages us to build up our treasure in real estate, investments, and material goods. How much time are we investing in building up worldly treasure? How much time are we investing in building up a heavenly treasure? To invest more time in the things of heaven, we must let go of some of the things of this world.

Being a Greeter/Usher is an opportunity to build up treasure in heaven Opening the door and giving a warm greeting is a wonderful way to make visitors to our church feel welcome. It’s also a great opportunity to keep in touch with fellow parishioners, speaking to them and welcoming them as they come into church. It’s an opportunity to help everyone feel a part of our parish family. We are currently in need of ushers for the Sunday morning 9:00 Mass. Is this a way you can share your time and talent? Are you willing to invest a small amount of time in the things of heaven?

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” (Luke 12:15)

The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the many things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions. Rather, strive to be rich in that which matters to God.

Several years ago the monthly collection for the benefit of our school was set up. Parishioners have continued to show their generosity month after month, year after year. Even now with the church renovation in progress, parishioners have continued to give generously in support of our school. The challenge Jesus presented has been accepted by
St. Joseph Parish - not storing up, not hoarding possessions. Rather, we are continuing to return to God a portion of what He has given us.

Capital Improvement Fund Update: Total received: Parish pledges and donations $104,706.11.
Alumni pledges and donations $11,640.00. Total $116,346.11. Balance in account as of 7/23 is $14,652.82. This week Nabholz was paid the final installment of $73,610 for the roof. $60,000 was borrowed from the diocese to help cover this check, with the additional $13,610 coming from the renovation account.

Natural Family Planning Week - July 25- 31: Married love is powerfully embodied in the spouses’ sexual relationship, when they most fully express what it means to become “one body” (Gn 2:24) and “one flesh” (Mk 10:8, Mt 19:6). The Church teaches that the sexual union of husband and wife is meant to express the full meaning of love, its power to bind a couple together and its openness to new life.

Has anyone every clearly explained for you WHY the Catholic Church does not approve of unnatural birth control? For most of us, the answer is NO. STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Luke 11:9)

Jesus assures us that if we ask Him, God will take care of what we need. The problem is that in our culture we often confuse what we really need with what we simply want. We need very little. However, we usually want so much more. A good steward only asks God for what he needs.

Many thanks to the volunteers who took care of Vacation Bible School this summer. It takes many hours and much planning ahead to put together an event like this. Thank you, Kim, and all who helped in any way with this program, whether it was giving time, talent or treasure - or all three. God bless you!

St. Joseph School News

St. Joseph School is happy to have Kimberly Willmann as our new teacher of grades 4 & 5 for the upcoming term. Kim attended school here at St. Joseph from Kindergarten through 8th grade, so she is already a very familiar face. Congratulations, Kimberly, and welcome!

St. Joseph School is excited to have another graduate ordained to the priesthood. Josh Stengel, a 1992 graduate, was ordained this weekend for the Diocese of Little Rock. Don Zeiler, a 1979 graduate, was ordained for the Diocese of Dallas in 2001. Erik Pohlmeier, a 1985 graduate, was ordained for the Diocese of Little Rock in 1998. We hope to keep that tradition going! A strong Catholic education helps!

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”
(Luke 10:42)

The story of Martha and Mary reminds us that God wants each of us to serve Him, just as Martha so graciously served. However, we will never know what God wants us to do unless we spend some time like Mary did, just sitting quietly at God’s feet and listening to His words.

Last Saturday a small group of Stewards spent most of the morning bringing order back to the landscaping around the church, the hall and the Sister’s house. Now that weeds have been pulled and bushes trimmed, the Stewardship Committee is looking for 3 or 4 people who would each be willing to maintain a small section of the flower beds. Checking on your area every couple of weeks would be sufficient and would not take a great amount of time. Might this be a ministry where you and/or your family could be Stewards of your time??

From Sheila Pursell, President NWA Catholic Respect Life Council:
During our most recent 40 Days for Life many people expressed an interest to "keep it going!" Since then, due to the peaceful and prayerful presence of a few there have been 5 women "turn around" at Harrison's abortion mill. That's 5 babies who did not die and 10 parents who will not live the rest of their lives knowing they aborted their child. Would you be willing to give a few hours a month to come out and pray?
Ideally, it would be great to have at least two people from 8:00-4:30 Monday - Thursday (the days and times Harrison is performing abortions) but any day or time is great. As you know, just praying in front of the mill is a powerful witness to those driving by and, most importantly, continues to saturate 1011 N. College Ave. with graces and prayer.
If you are able to participate in this ministry, please call 847-5535. If there is enough interest, it might be possible to take a van from this area so that everyone can ride together..

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:37)

This was Jesus’ simple command to all of us at the end of the Good Samaritan story. How do we do “likewise?” By taking the time to help when we are needed. By sharing our skills. By reaching into our pockets when financial help is needed. In short, by being a good steward.

We are blessed with many examples of good stewards in our parish who do “likewise.” We have many volunteers who share their time (help when needed), talent (skills) and treasure (reaching into their pockets), often without being asked. Light bulbs are replaced, weeds are pulled, parishioners are taken to appointments, food is prepared for bereaved families, generosity is shown in special collections for areas that have experienced disasters, food is collected for COS, parishioners share in the ministries at Mass. The list is endless. Jesus commands ALL of us to do “likewise,” not just a select few.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER

“Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals…” (Luke 10:4)

The story of Jesus sending out the 72 disciples reminds us that, as Christ’s disciples, we should not be overly concerned with material possessions. We also are expected to willingly share what we have with those who bring God’s message to us.

We have been presented with a Stewardship Opportunity for next Saturday - bringing order back to the landscaping. After this has been accomplished the Stewardship Committee would like to have a volunteer to coordinate maintaining the various areas around church. If 3 or 4 people would each be willing to take a small section of the flower beds it would not be a burden on anyone. Checking on your area every couple of weeks would be sufficient and would not take a great amount of time. Is this a ministry where you (or your family) could give the gift of your time? Simply contact the church office.
